Karen went to Newcastle High School in her KwaZulu-Natal hometown. After earning a distinction in matric she received a bursary to study towards a BCom Accounting, but opted instead, to join the Betsie Verwoerd Nurse Training College in Pretoria. A back injury forced her into a change of career in 1985, and she joined the Land Bank in Pretoria, followed by Trustbank Sasolburg, shortly thereafter. She then enjoyed a short stint at Bancura in Cape Town before moving back to Secunda to work at Santam. In 1998, Karen joined Machrie, a Financial Services Provider (FSP), and in 2006 she signed up with Multilink. After enriching two different FSPs for more than 20 years, she decided to join Momentum Consult Hoëveldrif as its franchise principal.
